Steve Irwin's widow Terri has made her first public statement since her husband's death last week, announcing details of a public memorial service to be held next week at Australia Zoo.

Referring to Steve as her "soulmate", Terri Irwin said that she "would like to thank everyone for the overwhelming outpouring of love, support and prayers for my family."

Terri Irwin said Australia Zoo, which Steve had built up, would host a public memorial service next Wednesday, at the 5,500-seater auditorium known as The Crocoseum.

"I realise that the Crocoseum has a limited capacity... but I cannot see how a memorial service would work in any other place other than the Crocoseum, which he built here at the zoo and of which he was so proud," the statement said.

"I would therefore ask that everyone please bear with me in this wish and help me to make this happen."

Meanwhile, Steve Irwin's Wildlife Warriors group has condemned a number of attacks on stingrays following his death. Ten stingrays were found on Queensland beaches with their barbs cut off.

A spokesperson for the group said that the action would be "the last thing Steve would want".
