Reality television star and singer Paris Hilton has explained her arrest for suspected drunk driving by saying that she was driving fast because she was hungry and wanted to get a burger.

Hilton was pulled over by police at 1am on Thursday morning for driving erratically. Police later confirmed that she had been arrested for failing a sobriety test.

Speaking during a radio interview in the US yesterday, Hilton said: "I had one margarita (and) was starving because I had not eaten all day."

"Maybe I was speeding a little bit and I got pulled over. I was just really hungry and I wanted to have an In-N-Out Burger."

"I think they (the police) wanted to make a statement. They even said 'there are a lot of people watching. We don't want them to think we are giving you special treatment'," she said.

Hilton has not yet been charged with any offence. The Los Angles County District Attorney will decide whether or not to press charges over the next few days.
