Actor and filmmaker Mel Gibson has been formally charged with drink-related offences after an incident last Friday in which he was arrested after being seen driving at 87mph in a 45mph zone.
Los Angeles County prosecutors said that the Oscar-winning director has been charged with driving under the influence of alcohol.
According to authorities, his blood-alcohol level was found to be over the legal Californian limit and he is also accused of driving with an open container of alcohol.
Gibson allegedly made anti-Semitic comments during his arrest.
In a statement he said he had suffered a relapse in his battle with alcoholism, adding that his outburst did not reflect his true views.
"Please know from my heart I am not an anti-Semite. I am not a bigot. Hatred of any kind goes against my faith."
If convicted on the alcohol charges, he could face six months in jail.
He was scheduled for an arraignment on 28 September.
