In his first theatre appearance for more than five years, actor Sean McGinley will rejoin the Druid theatre company for the world premiere of Stuart Carolan's black comedy 'Empress of India'.

McGinley, a member of the Druid founding company of actors, joins the new Druid acting ensemble for this play with actors of a new generation including Sarah-Jane Drummey, Nick Lee, Aaron Monaghan, Tadhg Murphy, Catherine Walsh and Miquel Barcelo.

Druid recently had a sell-out success with its critically acclaimed DruidSynge play cycle at New York's Lincoln Centre Festival.

Directed by Garry Hynes, 'Empress of India' is presented by arrangement with the Galway Arts Festival - the play was originally commissioned by the Festival and Rose Parkinson.

This is Carolan's follow-up to his first play, 'Defender of the Faith', which premiered at the Peacock, Dublin in 2004 and which was a joint winner of the George Devine Award in 2005.

'Empress of India' will open at Galway's Town Hall Theatre on Tuesday 12 September (previews from Friday 8 September) for a limited run before moving to the Abbey Theatre for two weeks (Tuesday 4 - Saturday 14 October) as part of the Dublin Theatre Festival.
