Dan Brown's controversial bestselling novel 'The Da Vinci Code' has been banned in Iran after protests from Christian clergy, according to Reuters.

An unnamed official at the Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance said: "Based on the request of three Christian clerics, yesterday we decided to ban its republication."

Copies of the Persian translation of Brown's book will remain on sale in Iran but a ninth edition will not be printed.

Some Christians have complained about the plot of the book, which says that Jesus Christ married Mary Magdalene and that their descendants are still alive today.

'The Da Vinci Code' film, starring Tom Hanks, Audrey Tautou and Jean Reno, was not released in Iran.
