Frank O'Connor Awards shortlist announced

The shortlist for the 2006 Frank O'Connor International Short Story Award was announced at the weekend, with Irish author Philip Ó Ceallaigh among the nominees.

Ó Ceallaigh is the first Irish author to be listed among the nominees for the prestigious award, which offers prize money of €35,000.

He was shortlisted for his book 'Notes from A Turkish Whorehouse', which is published by Penguin.

Also nominated are Haruki Murakami for 'Blind Willow, Sleeping Woman' (Harvill Secker), Rachel Sherman for 'The First Hurt' (Open City Books), Peter Stamm for 'In Strange Gardens & Other Stories' (Other Press), Rose Tremain for 'The Darkness of Wallis Simpson' (Chatto) and Samrat Upadhyay for 'The Royal Ghosts' (Houghton Mifflin).

The winner of the award will be announced in September during the Frank O'Connor International Short Story Festival in Cork.
