It was announced yesterday that Oscar winning actress Charlize Theron and 'Alien' star Sigourney Weaver are among the big-name stars who will appear at this year's Edinburgh International Film Festival (EIFF).

The actors will join the festival's patron, Sean Connery, and 'Oceans 11' director Steven Soderbergh, who are also due to participate in the festival's 60th anniversary programme.

Weaver's new film, 'Snow Cake', will get its UK premiere and Cuban hip-hop documentary, 'East of Havana', which Theron produced and financed, will also be shown at EIFF.

Douglas Mackinnon's 'The Flying Scotsman', based on the true story of Scottish cycling champion Graeme Obree's battle with depression, will open the festival and the Carol Reed film noir classic, 'Odd Man Out' - which dates back to the first festival in 1947 - is the closing film.

This year EIFF, which takes place from 14 to 27 August, will showcase 163 films from 37 countries.
