Galway's Druid Theatre Company opened its production of the plays of John Millington Synge as part of the prestigious Lincoln Centre Festival in New York yesterday.

The 'DruidSynge' cycle of six plays - eight and half hours in performance - was first performed by Druid at the Galway Arts Festival last year.

It features six Synge plays - 'Riders to the Sea' (1902), 'The Playboy of the Western World' (1907), 'Shadow of the Glen' (1902), 'The Tinker's Wedding' (1907), 'The Well of the Saints' (1905) and 'Deirdre of the Sorrows' (1907) - all directed by Tony Award-winning director Garry Hynes.

The cast, which is the same as in Ireland, includes Tony Award-winner Marie Mullen, Mick Lally and Eamon Morrissey.

The company is travelling with 19 actors as well as stage crew and have just come from performing to rave reviews at the new Guthrie Centre in Minneapolis.

'DruidSynge' will run at the Lincoln Centre until 23 July.
