Documentaries feature strongly at Fleadh

Several controversial documentaries, including 'Wal-Mart: The High Cost of Low Price' and and Annie Sudberg's 'The Trials of Darryl Hunt' - a film that documents the aftermath of a brutal rape/murder and wrongful conviction in the American South - feature in this year's programme for the Galway Film Fleadh.

The programme for the 18th Fleadh, which runs from Tuesday 11 to Sunday 16 July, was launched in Galway last night. 

Director Ray McCormack will be in Galway for the Irish premiere of the topical 'A Crude Awakening: The Oil Crash' and 'An Inconvenient Truth', the Al Gore-narrated overview of climate change will also be screened.

The opening film for this year's Fleadh is a debut feature called 'Shut Up and Shoot Me' by Anglo-Czech writer/director Steen Agro.

Director Nick Roeg ('Walkabout', 'Performance'), actress Kathy Bates ('Misery', 'Fried Green Tomatoes') and legendary screenwriter Robert Towne ('Chinatown', 'The Firm') will all present masterclasses at the Fleadh.

New Irish features that will be shown at this year's event include 'Middletown', starring Matthew Macfadyen, Eva Birthistle and Gerard McSorley, and the world premiere of the debut feature by director Niall Heery. 'Small Engine Repair'.

Classical and contemporary Italian cinema - such as Fellini's 'Amarcord' and Visconti's 'The Leopard' alongside contemporary masterpieces such as 'Saimir' and 'Quo Vadis Baby' - will be shown during the Fleadh's Italian season.

This year the Fleadh will also feature an Out On Film strand which showcases films of particular interest to the Gay community including 'CRAZY', 'Time to Leave' and the documentary, 'Left Lane', about a year in the life of feminist folk poet, Alix Olson.

The Galway Film Fleadh Box Office opens on 27 June at the Town Hall Theatre in Galway.
