Australian director Peter Weir ('The Truman Show', 'Master and Commander') has left production of Johnny Depp's latest film, 'Shantaram'.
There is speculation that Weir and Depp, who is also producing, had creative differences.
Variety reports that a spokesman for studio Warner Bros said: "Peter moved on from this film because his interpretation of it differed greatly than that of the studio and producers."
'Shantaram', which is based on the book by Gregory David Roberts, is about the life of an Australian heroin addict who escapes from a maximum security prison, becomes a doctor in the slums of India and ultimately finds himself fighting Russian troops in Afghanistan.
Production on the film is still expected to begin in early 2007.
