Police in Detroit have said that D12 rapper Proof fired the first shot in the bar shootout in which he was killed.
The Associated Press reports that the bullet hit 35-year-old Keith Bender in the head; he is in a critical condition in a Detroit hospital.
Following the shootout at the CCC bar, Proof, real name DeShaun Holton, was brought by car to a medical centre where he was pronounced dead.
Detroit Police spokesman Sergeant Omar Feliciano said detectives were trying to establish who had shot the rapper and that homicide detectives had told his office that Proof fired first.
When police arrived at the bar at around 4.30am on Tuesday morning they found it empty; it was operating outside of its licensed hours.
Detroit Police Chief Ella Bully-Cummings said detectives were facing a unique challenge because no victim was present at the crime scene; Bender was also taken to hospital by private car.
