Emmerdale takes Best Soap award

The cast and crew of 'Emmerdale' are celebrating their latest achievement after the show was named Best Soap Opera at this year's Royal Television Society Awards.

An 'Emmerdale' spokesperson said: "We are all absolutely thrilled that 'Emmerdale' has received this recognition after what has been another fantastic year for the show."

The award for Best Entertainment Show was scooped by BBC comedy 'The Catherine Tate Show', beating reality television shows 'The X Factor' and 'I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here'.

The award for Best Sitcom went to 'The Thick of It', with 'The Government Inspector' picking up the award for Best Single Drama.

The award for Best Actor went to David Threlfall, who stars in 'Shameless 2' and 'The Queen's Sister', with Lesley Sharp picking up the Best Actress award for 'Afterlife'.

Screenwriter Andrew Davies was named Best Drama Writer for BBC's soap-style adaptation of Charles Dickens's 'Bleak House'.

A host of stars from the world of television attended the awards ceremony in London.
