Pop singer Kylie Minogue paid a surprise visit to a Sri Lankan theatre troupe formed in the aftermath of the Tsunami, while travelling home to Australia from France.

The singer, who is recovering after receiving treatment for breast cancer, delighted young children at the theatre group, of which she is a patron, by joining them for an elephant ride.

Most of the children involved in the Children of the Sea Theatre Group were orphaned by the Tsunami or civil war. The group was set up by English producer and director Toby Gough.

Speaking about the singer's visit, Gough said: "Though I had often asked her to visit us here in Sri Lanka her arrival was a total surprise - the children were overjoyed."

During her visit, Minogue said: "I was so happy to finally meet the children and see the results of Toby's energy and vision; their triumph through adversity is inspiring."

"My visit was all too short. Everyone has been so welcoming; I do hope to return one day soon," she said.
