Voters last night chose "Every Song Is A Cry For Love", performed for the first time on the Late Late Show Eurosong 2006, to represent Ireland at the Eurovision Song Contest in Athens in May.

The public voted by telephone and text to secure Brian Kennedy's song its place in the Eurovision Semi-final on Thursday 18 May.

Voting began after the three contending songs had been performed by Brian live on the Late Late at approximately 10.10pm and closed at 11.15pm.

Pat announced that 'Every Song Is A Cry For Love' song had won live on air at 11.35pm, in the presence of scrutineer, Gerard Moran, from Price Waterhouse Coopers.

Composer Brian Kennedy, on the announcement that his song had won, said: "I am so delighted that the public have chosen this song but I would have been proud to bring any of the three songs I performed tonight to Athens. I'm really looking forward to representing Ireland on the Eurovision stage. Roll on 18th May!"

Kevin Linehan, Commissioning Editor of Entertainment programmes, said: "Brian did justice to all three songs tonight. Any of them would have given us a great shot on the Eurovision stage. We are sure that Brian will do Ireland proud in Athens in May."

The Eurovision Song Contest Semi-Final takes place on Thursday 18 May, in which twenty-four countries will compete for ten places in the final.

These ten will join the fourteen countries who have already qualified for the final, which will be held on Saturday 20 May.

RTÉ Television will broadcast both shows live.
