The nominations for the 78th Academy Awards have been announced, with 'Brokeback Mountain' making the shortlist in eight categories, including Best Director and three of the four acting categories.

'Crash', 'Walk the Line', 'Capote' and 'Good Night, and Good Luck' have also received numerous nominations.

There are three Oscar nominations for George Clooney for acting, directing and writing while Steven Spielberg's controversial 'Munich' has also been shortlisted.

As expected, Joaquin Phoenix has received a Best Actor nomination for his performance in 'Walk the Line' with co-star Reese Witherspoon nominated in the Best Actress category.

The other nominees for Best Actor are: Philip Seymour Hoffman ('Capote'), Terrence Howard ('Hustle & Flow'), Heath Ledger ('Brokeback Mountain') and David Straithairn ('Good Night, and Good Luck').

The Best Actress shortlist includes: Judi Dench ('Mrs Henderson Presents'), Felicity Huffman ('Transamerica'), Keira Knightley ('Pride & Prejudice') and Charlize Theron ('North Country').

The nominations for Best Supporting Actor are: George Clooney ('Syriana'), Matt Dillon ('Crash'), Paul Giamatti ('Cinderella Man'), Jake Gyllenhaal ('Brokeback Mountain') and William Hurt ('A History of Violence').

Amy Adams ('Junebug'), Catherine Keener ('Capote'), Frances McDormand ('North Country'), Rachel Weisz ('The Constant Gardener') and Michelle Williams ('Brokeback Mountain') have been nominated in the Best Supporting Actress category.

Shortlisted for Best Director are: George Clooney ('Good Night, and Good Luck'), Paul Haggis ('Crash'), Ang Lee ('Brokeback Mountain'), Bennett Miller ('Capote') and Steven Spielberg ('Munich').

The films nominated for Best Picture are: 'Brokeback Mountain', 'Capote', 'Crash', 'Good Night, and Good Luck' and 'Munich'.

'Brokeback Mountain' also appeared in the category for Best Adapted Screenplay along with 'Capote', 'The Constant Gardener', 'A History of Violence' and 'Munich'. 

The nominees for Best Original Screenplay are: 'Crash', 'Good Night, And Good Luck', Match Point', 'The Squid and the Whale' and 'Syriana'.

'Don't Tell', 'Joyeux Noel', 'Paradise Now', 'Sophie Scholl – The Final Days' and 'Tsotsi' are nominated for Best Foreign Language Film.

'Darwin's Nightmare', 'Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room', 'March of the Penguins', 'Murderball' and 'Street Fight' are nominated for the Best Documentary Feature Oscar.

'Howl's Moving Castle', 'Tim Burton's The Corpse Bride' and 'Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit' are nominated for Best Animated Film.

The Oscars ceremony takes place on 5 March in Beverly Hills.
