Irish novelist John McGahern has been awarded the literature prize at the 10th annual South Bank awards.

He won the award for his first book of non-fiction, 'Memoir', which recounts the events of his youth in rural Ireland during the 1940s and 1950s.

McGahern was competing with Man Booker Prize nominees Julian Barnes and Zadie Smith.

Hosted by Melvyn Bragg on Friday night, awards also went to 'Elizabeth I' for best TV drama, while the cinema prize went to 'Wallace and Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit'.

Sheffield singer-songwriter Richard Hawley's album 'Coles Corner' beat Gorillaz and Kate Bush to the pop music award.

'Doctor Who' actor Billie Piper was presented with the award for breakthrough artist.
