Babyshambles singer Pete Doherty has been remanded in custody after pleading guilty to a charge of possessing heroin.

The court heard that Mr Doherty was arrested yesterday afternoon in London on suspicion of being under the influence of illegal drugs.

When he was searched police allegedly found a wrap of white powder in the pocket of his jeans, the court was told.

Mr Doherty reportedly said: "It was in my pocket from earlier, I didn't even know it was there."

He is also reported to have said: "Please, officers, don't do this. I've got a gig tonight, cut me a break."

An application for bail was refused by the district judge, who said: "I'm sorry if my order will affect your fans and people who go to your concerts."

The singer was remanded in custody to appear at Thames Magistrates' Court again on 8 February, when is due to sentenced in relation to other charges of drugs possession.
