It was announced yesterday that The Pogues are to be presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2006 Meteor Ireland Music Awards.
The star-studded awards show takes place at The Point Theatre in Dublin on Thursday 2 February and it will be broadcast on RTÉ 2 at 9pm the following Sunday, 5 February.
The band originally known as The Pogue Mahones were formed by Shane McGowan, Spider Stacey, Jem Finer and James Fearnley in London's Kings Cross in 1982.
They played the London pub circuit with Andrew Ranken on drums and Cait O'Riordan on bass and changed their name to The Pogues.
Subsequently Philip Chevron and Terry Woods joined the band with Darryl Hunt replacing O'Riordan.
Their combination of Irish folk tradition, haunting lyrics and beautiful melodies with punk abandon created a totally unique sound.
Twenty-four years after embarking on their eventful and colourful career, this will be their first major award.
On hearing of the award Stacey said: "It's a fantastic accolade to be given after all these years and we hope that everyone will enjoy the evening as much as we will."
The Pogues will perform on the night along with The Darkness, Westlife, Jamie Cullum, Damien Dempsey, Bell X1 and Republic of Loose.
