Charlize Theron is to star in and produce a new drama called 'The Ice at the Bottom of the World'.
Based on a fictional short story by Mark Richard, the film tells the story of a Navy Captain whose retirement puts strain on his dysfunctional family.
Theron will play one of the captain's daughters, a single mother who is a heroin addict.
The actress has owned the rights to the story for a number of years.
The film will begin production later this year.
Theron will next be seen on Irish cinema screens in the drama 'North Country'; the film opens on 3 February.
