'Coronation Street' star Johnny Briggs is reportedly set to leave the show next year, after his character Mike Baldwin loses his battle with Alzheimer's disease.

According to The News of the World, Briggs, who has played the part of the factory boss for almost 30 years, will leave when his current two-year contract expires next autumn.

A 'Coronation Street' spokesperson reportedly told the newspaper: "His storyline has some way to run but he will be leaving in 2006 after completing 30 years in the show. It was his decision to retire."

The actor recently commented on his busy workload, saying: "When I started we were filming two episodes a week and now we're doing five."
