British playwright Harold Pinter has won the Nobel Prize for Literature.
Pinter was described in the Swedish Academy's citation as an author who "uncovers the precipice under everyday prattle and forces entry into oppression's closed rooms".
"Pinter restored theatre to its basic elements: an enclosed space and unpredictable dialogue, where people are at the mercy of each other and pretence crumbles," continued the citation.
Pinter, who has written 30 plays, as well as poetry, prose and screen adaptations, is currently the subject of 75th birthday celebrations at Dublin's Gate Theatre and receives $1.28m as part of the Prize.
He visited the Gate Theatre last weekend as part of the celebrations of his life and work; his play 'Betrayal' opens at the Gate tomorrow night.
