'Lord of the Rings' director Peter Jackson and wife Fran Walsh are bringing the best-selling video game 'Halo' to the big screen.

The Hollywood Reporter says that the duo have joined the project as executive producers and will be involved in all aspects of the creative process, including providing creatures and visual effects through their companies Weta Digital Ltd and Weta Workshop Ltd.

The project marks the first time the duo have provided such services for a film that Jackson is not directing; the film will be shot entirely in Wellington, New Zealand.

Commenting, Jackson said: "As a gaming fan, I'm excited to bring 'Halo's' premise, action and settings to the screen with all the specificity and reality today's technology can provide. I'm a huge fan of the game and look forward to helping it come alive on the cinema screen."

A director is expected to be announced for the film soon; the script was written by 'The Beach' author Alex Garland, who also penned the script for '28 Days Later'.

Jackson's remake of 'King Kong' opens in Irish cinemas on 15 December.
