'EastEnders' actor Joe Swash is recovering at home from a potentially life-threatening brain virus, his agent said today.

The 23-year-old was diagnosed with viral meningoencephalitis, which attacks the lining of the brain. Swash, who plays Mickey Miller in the BBC soap, collapsed at his mother's home last week and was rushed to hospital.

Luckily he had only a mild form of the virus and was discharged at the weekend. His agent said: "Joe Swash returned home over the weekend following a brief spell in hospital."

Doctors report he is on his way to a complete recovery with no lasting effects from the illness but requires further rest. He is expected back at work in time for Christmas.

Encephalitis is an inflammation of the brain tissue and is extremely rare.

Swash's 14-year-old sister Shana also appears in the soap playing his on-screen sister Demi. She took time off to be at her brother's side but plans a return to work this week.

Swash joined the BBC1 soap two years ago.
