Having taken part in casino heists in the film 'Ocean's Eleven', actor George Clooney is now taking on a new real-life role as a hotelier by investing in a new $3bn resort in Las Vegas.

The resort, casino and condominium project is called Las Ramblas and Clooney will invest in it with Cindy Crawford's nightclub owner husband Rande Gerber and two developers.

Clooney will join Gerber in planning and designing the hotel, restaurants, venues and casino in Las Ramblas.

Commenting on the venture, Clooney said: "We're clearly putting more than just our names to this project - we're investing financially and creatively to develop an idyllic environment that reflects our personal tastes and interests."

Clooney said that he and Gerber hope to attract their Hollywood friends to the resort.

Construction on the resort will begin in mid-2006 with the first four towers in the 11-tower complex to be completed by early 2008.
