The American actress, Barbara Bel Geddes, has died at the age of 82 at her home in Maine. She had been suffering from lung cancer.

While, she was best known for her role as Miss Ellie Ewing in the long running television series, 'Dallas', she began her acting career on Broadway. Her most prominent stage role was as Maggie in the 1955 Broadway production of the Tennessee Williams play 'Cat on a Hot Tin Roof'.

In cinema, she starred in Alfred Hitchcock's 1958 thriller 'Vertigo' and in Elia Kazan's 1950 film noir 'Panic in the Streets'. The actress was nominated for an Oscar for best supporting actress for the 1948 drama 'I Remember Mama'.

Dallas star, Larry Hagman, who played her screen son, JR, said she had kept to herself in recent years.
