Female musicians who worked on Julia Roberts' 2003 film 'Mona Lisa Smile' were discriminated against, the US government has said.

The 19 musicians were paid less than their male counterparts while working on the film. They brought a lawsuit against the movie's producers, Revolution Studios and Smile Productions.

The case was settled out of court and each of the women was awarded $3,500. The companies did not admit wrongdoing in the matter.

In 'Mona Lisa Smile' Julia Roberts played an art history teacher at an upper-class women's college who persuades her students to carve out an independent path for themselves.
