Green Day head up the nominations for the 22nd annual MTV Video Music Awards, short-listed in eight categories.
Gwen Stefani and Missy Elliot both received six nominations, while Irish rock band U2 were listed in five categories.
This year's awards will take place in Miami on 28 August, with Sean 'P Diddy' Combs lined up to present the ceremony.
Green Day have been nominated in the Video of the Year category for their single 'Boulevard of Broken Dreams'. The title track from their latest album 'Amercian Idiot' has also been shortlisted in two categories.
Battling it out against Green Day in the Video of the Year category are Coldplay's 'Speed of Sound', Kanye West's 'Jesus Walks', Snoop Dogg and Pharrell's 'Drop It Like It's Hot' and Gwen Steffani's 'Hollaback Girl'.
The Best Male Video category will be contested by Kanye West's 'Jesus Walks', 50 Cent's 'Candy Shop', Beck's 'E-Pro', Usher's 'Caught Up' and John Legend's 'Ordinary People'.
In the running for the Best Female Video award are Gwen Stefani's 'Hollaback Girl', Amerie's '1 Thing', Mariah Carey's 'We Belong Together', Shakira and Alejandro Sanz's 'La Tortura' and Kelly Clarkson's 'Since U Been Gone'.
Green Day, Kanye West and American Idol star Kelly Clarkson are set to perform at the event.
