A number of pieces of John Lennon memorabilia, including the tunic that inspired the 'Sgt Pepper's' album, are set to be auctioned in London later this month.

The military band tunic, worn by Lennon in a photo shoot for Life magazine in 1966, could sell for £30,000.

Other items in the sale, to take place on 28 July, include the songwriter's hand-written lyrics to 'All You Need is Love', which could fetch £500,000, an electric piano given to Lennon by Elton John and an oil painting done by Lennon as a student.

"Together, the items in the sale combine all the best elements of the man himself," Ted Owen, director of the auctioneers Cooper Owen said. He added that the sale would "celebrate Lennon and his legacy the way it was meant to be celebrated."

Lennon's band-mate and song-writing partner in The Beatles, Paul McCartney, performed 'Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band' with U2 for the first time live last Saturday at the Live 8 concert in London's Hyde Park.
