'Emmerdale' actor Patrick Mower has revealed that he could lose his sight if he does not have surgery in the next two years.

Mower, who plays antiques dealer Rodney Blackstock in the soap, first noticed that his sight was failing while playing tennis about six months ago.

The 62-year-old actor was initially diagnosed with dust behind the eye, but the treatment of vitamins and new glasses did not rectify the problem.

After attending a specialist hospital in London, Mower was told that he had pre-retinal glial membrane, which means the retina crinkles up continuously.

The actor was told that he required surgery in order to avoid the danger of going blind, but he has also been warned that the operation is quite risky.

According to the News of the World, Mower said: "When they told me I'm going blind I was distraught."

"Our little son Maxim is only seven and the most beautiful boy in the world. I want to see him grow up - the thought I may not terrifies me," he said.

The actor said that he had not booked the surgery yet because he was apprehensive and also because he was working on a big story-line at the minute.
