Actor Tom Cruise has decided to drop his complaints against the four people who doused him with water at the UK premiere of his new film 'War of the Worlds'.

However, Scotland Yard said that the actor's decision not to pursue the matter, did not automatically mean that the four men involved in the stunt would not face assault charges.

A police spokesperson said: "We will take into account the victim's views, but as of today the four men are still on police bail and are due to report back to police on July 4."

Cruise was squirted with water from a microphone when he stopped to answer a question for one of the men, who was posing as a journalist, during his red carpet walkabout before the film screening.

Cruise reacted angrily to the incident, saying: "I'm here giving you an interview, answering your questions and you do something really nasty."

The man who was posing as a journalist at the event and his three-man camera crew were filming a sketch for a new Channel 4 show.

The television company has apologised to Cruise for the incident. "The stunt was intended to be light-hearted rather than malicious and we would apologise to Mr Cruise for any offence caused," a spokesperson said.
