Green Acres actor Albert dies, 99

Eddie Albert, the actor best known for his starring role in the US TV series 'Green Acres', has died. He was 99.

Albert died of pneumonia on Thursday at his home in California.

Making his Broadway debut in 1936, Albert moved on to film roles but left Hollywood to serve in the US Navy during World War Two.

He saw action during the battle of Tarawa Island in the South Pacific and was awarded the Bronze Star for rescuing a group of stranded and wounded marines.

After the war he became a regular character actor on television and in films for six decades.

He was twice nominated for Best Supporting Actor Oscars, for 'Roman Holiday' in 1954 and 'The Heartbreak Kid' in 1973.
