Former 'ER' star Anthony Edwards has joined the cast of 'Zodiac', the new film from 'Se7en' director David Fincher.

The film is based on the true story of the so-called 'Zodiac Killer', who terrorised San Francisco for over two decades.

Jake Gyllenhaal will play the journalist and author Robert Graysmith, who wrote the books 'Zodiac' and 'Zodiac Unmasked' upon which the film is based.

Robert Downey Jr will play Paul Avery, Graysmith's colleague at the San Francisco Chronicle, the newspaper that the killer used to communicate with authorities.

Variety reports that Edwards is to play the partner of the lead detective (Mark Ruffalo) on the case, who suffers a nervous breakdown during the investigation.

Production is set to begin on the film in August.
