BBC Worldwide has signed a co-production deal with US cable channel HBO for Ricky Gervais' new comedy series 'Extras'.

The Hollywood Reporter says that under the deal HBO will air 'Extras' in the US; the show will be shown on BBC 2 in the coming months.

In a statement about the HBO deal, Gervais joked: "Those are the type of people we want to be in business with. It's an honour to be on the same channel that gave us 'The Sopranos', and they made me an offer I couldn't refuse."

Written by Gervais and Stephen Merchant, 'Extras' follows the misfortunes of aspiring actor Andy Millman (Gervais), who finds that he can't get big parts in films.

Merchant will star as Millman's agent, with Ben Stiller, Kate Winslet and Samuel L Jackson all set to make cameos during the series.
