Actor Christopher Eccleston has announced that he is quitting his lead role in the new 'Doctor Who' show, after just one series.

The actor, who previously starred in the television series 'Cracker' and the film 'Shallow Grave', has said that he didn't want to get typecast.

Eccleston also claimed that he found the filming of the series gruelling and said that he wanted to explore new projects.

In a statement issued through the BBC last night, Eccleston said: "The audience's response for the new Doctor Who has been incredible and I am really proud to be part of it and I hope viewers continue to enjoy the series."

The BBC confirmed that talks were underway with 'Casanova' star David Tennant as a possible replacement for Eccleston in the Dr Who role.

It was also confirmed that former pop singer Billie Piper will remain with the show in the role of the Time Lord's assistant Rose.

The BBC announced earlier yesterday that a second series of 'Dr Who' had been commissioned, after pulling in 9.9 million viewers on the show's return last Saturday.

Lead writer on the show Russell T Davies will write a Christmas special of 'Dr Who', which will feature Eccleston.
