Paul Hester, the drummer with rock group Crowded House, has been found hanged in a park in Melbourne. He was 46.
Paramedics said Hester had "attempted suicide" and died from strangulation. Police say the death is not suspicious.
Hester played with New Zealand group Split Enz before forming Crowded House with Neil Finn in 1985. The group's hits included 'Weather With You' and 'Don't Dream It's Over'.
Finn said he was devastated by the death. "I have lost one of my best mates," he told Australian paper the Daily Telegraph.
Hester had become a television presenter after leaving the band in 1994. He lived in Melbourne with his partner and two daughters.
