'The Simpsons' has been voted the Greatest Cartoon in a poll of Channel 4 viewers.

The full results of the poll to establish The 100 Greatest Cartoons were revealed in a countdown programme screened on Channel 4 last night.

'The Simpsons' beat competition from such classics as 'Tom and Jerry', 'Toy Story', 'Shrek', 'The Incredibles' and 'Popeye'.

The poll saw 'Tom and Jerry' take second place, 'South Park' claim the third spot, with 'Toy Story' and 'Family Guy' in fourth and fifth place respectively.

'Bugs Bunny' and 'The Lion King' also made the Top 10 in the poll results. 'Popeye' was placed 23 and 'Danger Mouse' followed in 24th place.

'The Simpsons' was created in 1986 by Matt Groening, who named the characters after his family.
