Comedy actors Meera Syal and Sanjeev Bhaskar have married away from the limelight in a low-key register office ceremony, it emerged today.
The wedding was confirmed by a spokesman for Syal after newspaper reports that the couple had invited just 20 guests to the event in Lichfield, Staffordshire.
Her London-based agent, Dallas Smith, issued a short statement which said: "Following inquiries, Sanjeev and Meera are happy to confirm that they married last week at a very quiet family-only ceremony."
Syal - who plays her new husband's grandmother in spoof chat show The Kumars at Number 42 - told the Daily Mail that she and Bhaskar were ecstatically happy. The actress, writer and playwright, added: "We are quite a private couple and just wanted a small family affair."
The couple made their names by starring in the ground-breaking BBC comedy Goodness Gracious Me! in the 1990s.
