RTÉ broadcast 18 of the 20 most-watched programmes on Irish television last year.

The independent research company Nielsen Research, which collects and compiles television ratings, found that 'The Late Late Toy Show' was the most-watched programme in 2004 with an average viewing audience of 940,000.

'You're a Star - The Result', the episode of 'The Late Late Show' broadcast on 19 March, 'Killinaskully - The Nativity' and The Eurovision Song Contest completed the Top Five.

Of the Top 10, eight programmes were home-produced and nine were broadcast by RTÉ on either RTÉ One or RTÉ Two.

'Coronation Street' and 'I'm a Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here!' were the only programmes not broadcast by RTÉ to feature in the Top 20.

The Rose of Tralee broadcast on 24 August, 'Fair City' (6 January 2004) and 'Winning Streak' (18 December 2004) were at numbers 11, 12 and 14 respectively.
