Former Libertines singer Pete Doherty is to be interviewed on BBC2's current affairs programme Newsnight about his drug problem tonight.

Doherty, 25, was fired from The Libertines after he failed to halt his drug habit.

His mother Jacqueline wrote a letter to Newsnight, seeking understanding for her son, who claims to have often spent £1,000 a day on crack cocaine and heroin.

"Peter is a gifted poet, writer and thinker, please be considerate with him. I feel he is very vulnerable. He is a sensitive soul and has many good points," she wrote.

Doherty will be interviewed by presenter Kirsty Wark on the show, which begins at 10.30pm.
