The nominations for the 2005 Golden Globes have been announced in the US, with Liam Neeson among the nominees for Best Actor.

Neeson is nominated for his performance in the film 'Kinsey' and is joined by Javier Bardem ('The Sea Inside'), Don Cheadle ('Hotel Rwanda'), Johnny Depp ('Finding Neverland') and Leonardo DiCaprio ('The Aviator') in the Best Actor (Drama) category.

Scarlett Johansson ('A Love Song for Bobby Long'), Nicole Kidman ('Birth'), Imelda Staunton ('Vera Drake'), Hilary Swank ('Million Dollar Baby') and Uma Thurman ('Kill Bill Vol 2') are the nominees for Best Actress (Drama).

'Hotel Rwanda', the new film from Belfast-born director Terry George, is nominated in the Best Picture category, with 'The Aviator', 'Closer', 'Finding Neverland', 'Kinsey' and 'Million Dollar Baby' completing the nominees.

The Best Director shortlist is: Clint Eastwood ('Million Dollar Baby'), Marc Forster ('Finding Neverland'), Mike Nichols ('Closer'), Alexander Payne ('Sideways') and Martin Scorsese ('The Aviator').

'Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind', 'The Incredibles', 'Andrew Lloyd Webber's The Phantom of the Opera', 'Ray' and 'Sideways' make the shortlist for Best Picture (Musical or Comedy).

The nominees for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy are: Annette Bening ('Being Julia'), Ashley Judd ('De-Lovely'), Emmy Rossum ('Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Phantom of the Opera'), Kate Winslet ('Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind') and Renée Zellweger ('Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason').

Jim Carrey ('Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind'), Jamie Foxx ('Ray'), Paul Giamatti ('Sideways'), Kevin Kline ('De-Lovely') and Kevin Spacey ('Beyond the Sea') are the nominees for Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy.

Cate Blanchett is nominated in the Best Supporting Actress category for her role in 'The Aviator' and is joined by Laura Linney ('Kinsey'), Virginia Madsen ('Sideways'), Natalie Portman ('Closer') and Meryl Streep ('The Manchurian Candidate').

David Carradine ('Kill Bill Vol 2'), Thomas Haden Church ('Sideways'), Jamie Foxx ('Collateral'), Morgan Freeman ('Million Dollar Baby') and Clive Owen ('Closer') are nominated in the Best Supporting Actor category.

The nominees for Best Foreign Language Film are: 'The Chorus' ('Les Choristes'), 'House of Flying Daggers', 'The Motorcycle Diaries',  'The Sea Inside' and 'A Very Long Engagement'.

The awards are voted on by members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association and are viewed as an indicator of possible Oscar winners.

The awards ceremony will be held on 16 January 2005.
