John Crowley, director of the Irish box office hit 'Intermission', was among the winners at the British Independent Film Awards in London last night.
Crowley won the Douglas Hickox Award for Debut Director for his work on 'Intermission'.
The big winner on the night was Mike Leigh's new film 'Vera Drake', which won six awards: Best Film, Best Director, Best Actress (Imelda Staunton), Best Actor (Phil Davis), Best Supporting Actor/Actress (Eddie Marsan) and Best Achievement in Production.
The Korean movie 'Oldboy' was named Best Foreign Film, with the acclaimed 'Touching the Void' winning the Best Documentary and Best Technical Achievement awards.
The Richard Harris Award went to Bob Hoskins, and author JK Rowling was named Variety UK Personality of the Year.
Ashley Walters, aka Asher D from So Solid Crew, was named Most Promising Newcomer for his performance in 'Bullet Boy'.
Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright won Best Screenplay for 'Shaun of the Dead'.
