'The Bourne Supremacy' and 'Bloody Sunday' director Paul Greengrass is to helm the movie version of Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons' acclaimed 1980s comic 'Watchmen'.

The Hollywood Reporter says that 'Watchmen' is often referred to as the 'War and Peace' of comics and is credited with redefining the superhero genre.

It tells of a group called the Crimebusters and the attempts to destroy them.

'Requiem for a Dream' director Darren Aronofsky had been attached to the film, but will not be behind the lens due to scheduling conflicts.

The script for the film has been penned by 'X-Men' scriptwriter David Hayter.

The plan is to have 'Watchmen' in cinemas in 2006.
