Midnight Oil singer Garrett now MP

Former Midnight Oil singer Peter Garrett has been elected to the Australian Parliament.

The 51-year-old environmental activist won the Sydney seat of Kingsford Smith for the Australian Labour Party and now faces three years on the Opposition benches.

Commenting on his new career to the Sydney Morning Herald, Garrett said: "I will put myself up to have my skills used in whatever way is appropriate."

"Although I care passionately about the environment and worked on it for many years ... I also have an ongoing interest in issues that affect myself and other people in the community."

Garrett is a former president of the Australian Conservation Foundation and made an unsuccessful bid for election to the Australian Senate as a member of the Nuclear Disarmament Party nearly 20 years ago.
