Johnny Depp's company Infinitum Nihil has bought the film rights to Gregory David Roberts' soon-to-be-published 'Shantaram: A Novel'.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Depp intends to star in the film as the narrator, a young Australian who escapes from a maximum security prison to Bombay, where he works in a first-aid station and smuggles drugs and guns.

The story is based on the real life experiences of its author.

Depp is currently working on 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory' and 'Pirates of the Caribbean 2'.
