This year's Cork Film Festival will present a special focus programme on young filmmaker Barbara Albert.

The programme will include her short films and culminate with the Irish Premiere of her recent acclaimed feature, 'Free Radicals'.

Albert was born in Vienna in 1970 and is widely considered to be one of the most promising film directors in Europe.

She studied directing and scriptwriting at the Vienna Film School from 1991 to 1995 and went on to collect several international film prizes for her short films.

Albert, who is also a writer and actor, co-founded the coop99 production company and quickly became a familiar name at festivals worldwide with her feature films including 'Northern Skirts' and 'Free Radicals'.

The 49th Cork Film Festival opens at the Cork Opera House on Sunday 10 October and continues until the following Sunday 17 October.
