The folk singer Cat Stevens, now known as Yusef Islam, has been denied access to the United States for security reasons.
The 56-year-old had been on a flight from London to Washington but it was diverted to Bangor in Maine.
US officials said the pop star, who converted to Islam, was denied access because his name was on a security watch list.
He had been allowed board the aircraft in London because airline officials initially failed to spot his name.
