As part of the Abbey Theatre's centenary, the new Thomas Davis Lecture Series on RTÉ Radio 1 will focus on 20th century theatre in Ireland.
Eight distinguished theatrical practitioners, critics and academics will present papers examining the multifaceted nature of theatre in Ireland from 1904 to 2004.
The Consulting Editor on the Players and Painted Stage series is Christopher Fitz-Simon, playwright, author and former Artistic Director of the Abbey Theatre, and the Producer is RTÉ Radio 1's Seamus Hosey.
The guest lecturers include Nicholas Grene, Professor of English Literature at Trinity College, Dublin; journalist, theatre critic and Member of the Irish Arts Council, Emer O'Kelly; and Joe Dowling, former Artistic Director of the Abbey Theatre.
The texts of the series will be produced in book form in mid-October by New Island Press/RTÉ Radio 1 under the title 'Players and Painted Stage'.
The Thomas Davis Lectures: Players and Painted Stage starts on Thursday 4 November at 8.02pm on RTÉ Radio 1.
