American actress Rosario Dawson has been charged with two counts of disorderly conduct and the obstruction of governmental administration following her arrest at a march against US President George W Bush in New York on Sunday.

The 25-year-old and co-star Vija Grosgalves were filming a scene for their new movie 'Medium Cool' and using the protest as a backdrop when they were arrested.

Police allege that they were "both masked" and used handkerchiefs "with only the area around their eyes showing". It is against the law in New York for protesters to hide their identity with masks.

The film's director, Stephen Marshall, showed the police a permit for filming, which they said was not valid. Marshall was then taken with his two stars to be arraigned.

The three are due back in court in November and could each face up to a year in jail if convicted.

Dawson, whose credits include '25th Hour' and 'Men in Black II', will be seen on cinema screens next year opposite Irish actor Colin Farrell in the historical epic 'Alexander'.
