The West Wing struggling to survive

Cult TV show 'The West Wing' is struggling to survive in the battle for ratings.

Actor Martin Sheen, who plays fictional Democratic President, Josiah Bartlet, could soon be voted out of office as viewership continues to plummet.

The political show, screened on RTÉ, is about to enter its sixth series in the US, but the chances of it getting another term are doubtful.

The show, which is nominated for 12 Emmys this year, pulled in 17m viewers in 2001 but this dropped to below 12m last year.

Its decline in popularity could be rooted in politics - with the president of NBC attributing it to the fact that the programme shows a democratic administration in action, at a time when Republicans are in power.
