Tom Cruise is to reunite with Steven Spielberg for an adaptation of HG Wells' classic sci-fi novel 'War of the Worlds', with his planned 'Mission: Impossible 3' shelved until next year.

The Hollywood Reporter says that Cruise had been due to shoot 'M:I-3' this summer, but will instead begin shooting 'War of the Worlds' with Spielberg in November.

'M:I-3' had been troubled by director problems: original helmer David Fincher left for another project and this summer 'Narc' director Joe Carnahan also exited the production.

The third big screen adventure of Cruise's secret agent Ethan Hunt will now shoot next summer, with 'Alias' creator JJ Abrams making his directorial debut.

Cruise and Spielberg previously worked together on 'Minority Report'.

Spielberg's planned film about the 1972 Munich Olympics massacre, due to shoot later this year, is to undergo a rewrite.
